The Lido of Venice, 12 km long sandy island, has always been Venice’s natural defence against the rage of the Adriatic sea. All the ventures of the powerful Serenissima fleet left from the port of San Nicolò, like in the year 998, when the Doge Pietro Orseolo II left here for the Dalmatian islands, winning a glorious victory that gave him full dominion on the Dalmatian coasts and the entire Adriatic sea, laying the foundations of Venice's economic and political power. To commemorate this victory, the Sensa Festival is held every year on Ascension day to celebrate Venice's partnership with the sea: throwing a ring in the sea the Doge pronounced these famous words: "Desponsamus te mare in signum veri perpetuique dominii".

Economic development was extremely important for Lido of Venice, its magnificent beach and warm golden sand: bathing at the sea and the introduction of the bathing hut (wooden construction used as a small house) became all the rage, distinguishing this small island with Venetian beaches.
Elite tourists came to Lido of Venice thanks to the construction of the luxury hotel Excelsior beautifully designed by architect Giovanni Sardi.
The construction, during the fascist era, of the summer location of the Venetian Casino and the institution of the Annual Venetian film festival still held at the Palazzo del Cinema both also had great impacts.
Few but interesting traces of the past have survived: the church of Santa Maria Elisabetta (mid XVI century), the church and convent of San Nicolò, with the XVI century cloisters and Jewish cemetery with tombs dating back to the XVI and XVII centuries.
The ancient Malamocco quarter and Alberoni bathing area are also characteristic.
